Crissy Field West Bluffs, San Francisco, Thursday, November 1, 2018

Crissy Field is located in the Presidio of San Francisco just east of the Golden Gate Bridge. The land that it resides on is an ancient salt marsh and estuary which was filled in for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition.  The site was recognized as desirable for air coast defense during World War I, was opened as an Army Airfield in 1921, and air operations continued until the 1970s.  In 1994 the National Park Service took over the Presidio including Crissy Field and the field was opened to the public as a park in 2001.

We had spectacular weather for our trip to San Francisco with pleasantly warm temperature and such calm winds that the reflection of the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge was clearly visible in the water.  Some of us used our umbrellas while sitting on the wharf with no worry that they would blow into the Bay.  The bridge looked very beautiful with the morning sun -- different than when it had been backlit when we painted it from the west on earlier paintsites.  It was a long drive to San Francisco, but kudos to our artists for extensive use of carpools.
