Uvas Canyon County Park, Morgan Hill. Thursday, April 2, 2015

2015's first "serious" Hike & Sketch Paintsite ("serious" Hike & Sketch Paintsites are those at which rattlesnake and mountain lion warnings are prominently posted):  Although the current coordinators failed to maintain the discipline and pace the group was accustomed to under Jenny's & Sylvia's leadership, we had a fine day painting, sketching, and even managed a little hiking.   We saw all the waterfalls (yes, there are actually waterfalls in Santa Clara County), painted most of them, and eventually managed to find each other in time for lunch and a critique in a sunny creekside spot.   Perfect!

Upcoming Paintsites:
  • Thursday, April 9, 2015:  Lucie Stern Community Center, Palo Alto
  • Thursday, April 16, 2015: Ulistac Natural Area, Santa Clara
  • Thursday, April 23, 2015: Cummins Iris Garden, Scotts Valley
  • Thursday, April 30, 2015: Chateau CharMarron Peony Garden, San Jose (11:30 start time)
Here are some of us at work ....

Spread out as we were, it's surprising that we found each other for lunch.

After lunch, showing and sharing some of what we'd done...

One of Leslie's sketches completed as a painting.

Shakun got the prize for coming the farthest for this Paintisite - from Minnesota!

Candy and her 1st painting of the falls.

Candy's 2nd painting  - rocks.  (Compare with Cathy's and Dick's similar subject matter)
Marilyn and her painting of the highest falls.

While Marilyn painted the falls, Cathy and Pat painted Marilyn

Cathy's painting of Marilyn painting the falls. (Unfortunately, I don't have Pat's painting of same.)

Pat's 2nd waterfall painting - this one sans Marilyn.

Another of Cathy's paintings.

And another.

And another.

And another!   (note Candy's and Dick's similar compositions)

Ha!  You were expecting another of Cathy's paintings?   Not so - this is John himself and one of his four fine paintings

Another of John's paintings

Rich produced four terrific sketches - here's one of them (see #2 below)

Rich's sketch #1

#2 - Black Rock Falls

#3

Rich also had time to do a color sketch:   #4
Here's my sketches from yesterday. With the limited space and treacherous footing at most locations, I elected to do mostly graphite sketches. The moss covered tree roots is the only color sketch.   Rich

Liz's 1st waterfall painting

Dick's painting of the lower falls
We were at the lower falls. A perfect day for plein air painting. Insects were all around us, but did not encroach. Dick

Brad's sketch of the aptly named Black Rock Falls

Unfortunately, we didn't get photos of all the sketches and paintings produced.   They may come trickling in so check back again for updates with new postings.
