Moss Landing. Thursday, July 30, 2015.

Lots to see and paint in Moss Landing:  Working boats, yachts, (some in the water, others high and dry), otters, the Old Salinas River, and the mighty power plant (smokestacks initially lost in the morning fog), and the ocean and beach.   And of course lunch at Phil's Fish Market --- a Paintsites tradition in the making.

Upcoming Paintsites:
  • Thursday, August 6, 2015:  Private Garden - members only.   (Go to the "Paintsites Details" web page from the "Members Only Home Page" for details.)
  • Thursday, August 13, 2015:  Westwind Community Barn, Los Altos Hills.
  • Saturday, August 18, 2015:  Sunnyvale Baylands Park, Sunnyvale.
  • Thursday, August 20, 2015:  Warner Hutton House, Saratoga, and, after lunch, the Saratoga Library where we'll take in the "Shades of Summer" exhibit.
  • Thursday, August 27, 2015:  Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve, Palo Alto.
For additional information and details, see the SCVWS website or the August Newsletter.

The morning was a bit overcast (but not in the least cold) or, as plein air artists say, "atmospheric"  --- which lent itself very well to painting boats ...

Christine

Broncha painting a harbor scene.

Helen and Lisha

Lisha's preliminary sketch.

Lisha's finished painting.

Helen's preliminary sketch of two fishing boats.

But before she could start on her final painting, this little fellow begged to be painted by Helen ...

... so she included him (her?) in her finished painting.

Liz, Melanie, Marilyn and Lois painting boats and an otter.

Marilyn insisted the otter perform some tricks before she painted him (her?).

Lois' painting of the basin and the power plant (and the otter).

Melanie's unfinished painting of the boat basin and the power plant.

The Old Salinas River was another popular subject:

Kathy's painting of the west bank of the river.

Mary R.'s painting of the Old Salinas River

Nora's painting of the east bank of the river.

Nora's sketch of the southern portion of  the east bank.

Sylvia's panoramic painting of the Old Salinas River.  (Compare with Sylvia's 17 May, 2012, painting of the same area --- that distant grove of eucalypti still calls to her!)

The little town is also picturesque ....
Jenny's painting of the Whole Enchilada's nautically themed landscaping.

While Jenny painted, John T. sketched the same subject.
Jenny stuck with restaurants for this painting of the Haute Enchilada and its nautically themed landscaping.

What we really made the long drive to Moss Landing for was ... lunch at Phil's
Artists stretched as far as the eye can see at Phil's.

After lunch, some headed back to the harbor while others headed to the beach...

Harbor scenes:
Kathy's after-lunch unfinished painting of a large yacht.

Nearby, this sleek yellow sloop caught Lois' attention ...

and Nora's ...
... and Christine's (unfinished painting).

While others made their way to the beach ...

Jenny's painting of  Janice on the beach.

John T.'s sketch of the signs leading to the beach.
Sylvia painted the harbor and power plant from a high beach dune.

Marilyn's painting of the Elkhorn Slough jetties.

Brad's painting of happy people on the beach.

Meanwhile back in the harbor ...
John's afternoon painting of the power plant.
