San Jose History Park, San Jose's Kelley Park. Thursday, August 23, 2018

We were fortunate that San Jose History Park's Summer 2018 hours meant an earlier opening so we were able to schedule a visit for our regular 10:00 AM start time.  For an August day the weather was pleasantly cool and a bit overcast (technically termed "fogust") which evoked cries of  "No shadows!".    How can we possibly paint if there are no shadows?   But, of course, we made the best of it (tho' some shadows would have been a bonus.  Especially with the concentration of late 19th and early 20th Century buildings with their super-abundance of ornate architectural details which just beg to be highlighted and defined by their shadows.)

Cindy

Cindy found this great scene looking thru the trees --- isn't that what artists are supposed to do - see things others don't see?

Constance's quick sketch of the Empire Firehouse

Constance's second painting - the blazing Crape (or Crepe) Myrtle in the background was what really caught her attention.  (Easy to see why this time of year!)

Benay's painting of the Empire Firehouse.  From a distance when first entering the park, some of us mistook it for a church --- easy to see why.

Thursday Paintsites coordinator Marilyn recently took a lesson in depicting reflections in windows so, when she entered the Park, what was the first thing she saw?   You guessed it - a handsome old house with a big bay window!

Marilyn's painting of the Nelson-DeLuz house (built 1905)

Leslie L's painting of the old Orchard Supply (OSH) boxcar.   She painted this for her husband who, like many of us, is lamenting the just announced closing of OSH (founded in 1931 in San Jose) by parent company Lowe's.

Thursday Paintsites first-timer Shelley
Shelley's unfinished painting of the "Dashaway Stables" (originally built 1888).    A great name and an abundance of architectural detail, for such a humble function, make this a particularly interesting subject.

Tiangong

Tiangong's fine painting of Main Street leading into the park.  The Pacific Hotel
is on the right, the Empire Firehouse just beyond it.

Tanvi

Tanvi's painting of the Associated Gasoline Station

John

John's unfinished painting of an old truck in the Associated Oil Service Station.   (Remember when  "service" was actually offered and not just a part of the name?)

Lunch:

We unwittingly chose a table that was a bit unbalanced so that when somebody sat down at one end, those on the other end got a bit of a bounce.    And when they got up, a bit of a drop.   Possibly the most exciting part of the day.

Weekend Paintsites Casa Grande, New Almaden, CA August 18, 2018

Four of our artists braved the day's extreme heat and had a great day painting at the Quicksilver Mining Museum and grounds. The visit was highlighted by a tour of Casa Grande by Docent Joan.
Our artists created many beautiful paintings.

Quail Hollow Ranch County Park, Felton, Thursday, August 16, 2018

Quail Hollow Ranch County Park is a 300-acre historic horse ranch and nature preserve, home to 15 habitats.  It contains exposed remnants of an ancient seabed and a very rare sand hills environment causing some of the hiking trails to be surprisingly sandy.  The property was first homesteaded in 1866.  From 1937-1954 it was owned by Larry and Ruth Lane, owners of Sunset Magazine.  In 1986 the ranch became a Santa Cruz County Park.

Eighteen artists enjoyed beautiful warm sunny weather, lots of shade under many trees, and better air quality than in the Bay Area.  Thanks to Dan Lazarus, Park Interpreter, for making us feel very welcome, appreciating our artwork, and telling a little about the natural history of the area.  Also thanks to Annie for suggesting this paintsite -- it is a very good site that we will definitely visit again.

Artists and their artwork:

Many artists are enjoying the shade of the ranch house and its
magnificent oak tree as they paint the ranch buildings

Brad captured the entire scene, the ranch house, ranch buildings,
and surrounding trees
The horse ranch buildings were the most popular subject:

Anna used to paint with us regularly, then she moved to Oregon.
We were delighted that she came back to paint with us.

Elaine G.

Mary

instead go directly to paper with brush.

The ranch house/visitor center was also a very popular subject:

The park abounds with glorious nature which made for wonderful paintings:

Leslie L. painted with us for the second week in a row

Leslie L. was delighted to give this painting to Dan, park
interpreter, to hang in the ranch house/visitor center.

The horses came all the way from the other side of the
large turnout to see what Marilyn had for them to eat.
Unfortunately there were many signs saying "Do Not Feed".

"granary tree" in the bottom left photo.

Dan Lazarus, park interpreter, welcomed us warmly
and told us a bit about the natural history of Quail Hollow Ranch
