The lone engine was calling out to be sketched! Some trees and all of the smoke are made up. It was the history park after all…
To be able to paint on a weekday(still on maternity leave) among other artists who were within a stone’s throw is so energizing. You don’t realize that you were energized at the plein air session until you come home and then feel like plopping – happily drained. Uma

I selected this very green house as my painting subject from the website that the paintsites coordinators mentioned for the beauty of the house and the fact that it was the home of Andrew P. Hill, the photographer and artist who led the effort to save the redwoods trees and create the first California State Park, Big Basin. Marilyn

My cousin, the family historian, said that A.P. Giannini, founder of the Bank of Italy and Bank of America, was my paternal grandfathers' uncle. My maternal grandmother worked at O'Brien's Ice Cream Parlor, and my dad's shop machinery is in the Trolley Barn. I was on a mission to find my family that day. We've been San Joseans since the mid-nineteenth century and it was a heartfelt reunion. Caroline

The San Jose History Museum in Kelly Park is a wonderful collection of old (some genuinely historical) homes, buildings and machinery. The general layout of the park and the 1915 SP locomotive I painted that afternoon reminded me of my old beloved HO gauge train set --- so I couldn't resist adding a hand (mine) gently placing the locomotive on its siding in the little make-believe park.
