Lucie Stern Community Center, Palo Alto, April 25, 2019

The Lucie Stern Community Center was built in 1934 in Spanish Mediterranean style.  There can be lots of activity here with the Community Theater, the Children's Theatre, the Children's Library, and the central Courtyard all in one complex. Even though the entire Center is quite large, most artists chose to paint in the "Secret Garden" behind the Children's Library where we could sit in the shade with great views of the garden, the Wishing Well, and the towers of the outdoor stage of the "Magic Castle".

Not everyone had even heard of the "Secret Garden", but Brad knew it well because he learned to read and developed a love for books in the Children's Library.  Back in the day, they held 'Reading Hours' for young children in the "Secret Garden".

It was a warm sunny day which was just perfect for outdoor painting, especially if one was in the shade.

Hakone Gardens, Saratoga, April 18, 2019

We are very grateful to SCVWS/Saratoga artist Kay Duffy for inviting us to paint at Hakone Gardens. At the grand age of 102 years, Hakone is one of the oldest authentic Japanese gardens in the Western Hemisphere and is on the National Register of Historic Places. We were there at the right time because the wisteria, cherry trees, and azaleas were all blooming and the weather was warm and sunny. You first enter the magnificent Mon (Main Gate) guarded by stone lanterns, then you see the beauty of  the main garden with the koi pond at its center surrounded by many flowering plants, shrubs, and trees, with the Moon Viewing House up the hill, waterfalls dropping into the pond, and the Moon Bridge crossing the pond.  If you venture father away you can find a traditional tea house, tea garden, dry garden,  bamboo garden and more in the 18 acre garden.

For more information about Hakone Gardens, visit their website:

Kay Duffy teaches a watercolor class at Hakone Gardens every 2nd and 4th Monday from 9:30 am - noon.  See http://www.kayduffywatercolors.com/ for details.
