The Lucie Stern Community Center was built in 1934 in Spanish Mediterranean style. There can be lots of activity here with the Community Theater, the Children's Theatre, the Children's Library, and the central Courtyard all in one complex. Even though the entire Center is quite large, most artists chose to paint in the "Secret Garden" behind the Children's Library where we could sit in the shade with great views of the garden, the Wishing Well, and the towers of the outdoor stage of the "Magic Castle".
Not everyone had even heard of the "Secret Garden", but Brad knew it well because he learned to read and developed a love for books in the Children's Library. Back in the day, they held 'Reading Hours' for young children in the "Secret Garden".
It was a warm sunny day which was just perfect for outdoor painting, especially if one was in the shade.

Brad painted in front of the Children's Library where he reports, "A good deal of the front lawn was a stroller 'parking lot' - something Terri Hill would have made into a wonderful painting - something which I didn't consider attempting."
